Greek Yogurt Pound Cake and Things I Suck At

First off, I am beyond moved by all of your comments on yesterday’s post about my mom. I was really only feeling awful for my friend’s loss and felt compelled to share my experience. I cried reading the comments. I wanted to send all of you guys an individual email, but realize I don’t have 28 hours to my day.

But moving on….(yes, we all need to eventually)….

Anyhow, Ameena wrote a post recently about things we are good at. It was a lovely post (as usual), but it got me thinking, “Wow, I suck at a lot of things!”

I know, the wise and mentally healthy thing to do would be to think about all the stuff I’m good at. Well, I’m leave that to Ameena’s post. My post is all about stuff I absolutely suck at!

I think its important to understand your weaknesses and accept them. This does not mean that you should not try to improve upon the things you are not good at. It’s just that if you focus your day on improving your deficiencies, you take away from time to shine. In some ways you become pretty good at many things, but not great at any one. Does that make sense? no? Oh well….Heres the list:

1) Whispering: or in any way talking or laughing quietly.  I’m loud.  Obnoxiously so.

2) Math: simply can’t….unless is calories of miles…..but sadly, that from a very disordered past. Any other sort of math function simply doesn’t register. Don’t ask me to do your taxes

3) Making Money: I guess the good news is I’m good at budgeting, so I’m not homeless.

4) Penmanship. My handwriting hasn’t improved since second grade. (Susan, I’m dying to type out my letters to you because I don’t want reading my letters to be like trying to translate hieroglyphics).

    5) Being subtle shocking, I know

    6) All things technology: This is why I’m kind of in love with the iphone. Its so simple, even I get it.

    7) Being a Comedien. It’s not being in front of people, I’m normally okay with that… and it’s not that I’m not funny. I mean, I think I have humorous ideas…the big issue for me it that I have TERRIBLE timing.  Wanna see? Okay.. Knock Knock…. Who’s there you say? It’s GRAVITY BITCH! Get it? The door opened onto a cliff. See? My timing was all off and I killed the joke.

8 ) Being a “healthy” blogger: Let’s see, I dont drink spinach, I don’t run marathons, I’m not vegan, I don’t have a thousand and two comments about my oatmeal, I drink diet coke, and don’t own a dslr camera.

    Did I miss anything?

There.  I feel better now that I’ve sufficiently knocked myself down a peg or two.  Besides, you guys are the awesome ones.  Stopping by here to read me. You rock.

So what do you suck at?

But guess what I AM good at? Gaining pounds, as in, pound cake!

    • 1 stick Butter, Softened
    • 1 cup Sugar (or sweetener of choice)
    • 2 Eggs
    • 1 and 1/2 cups Flour (or for a gluten free version, coconut flour works well!)
    • 1/2 tsp. Baking Powder
    • 1/2 tsp Baking Soda
    • 1/2 tsp Cinnamon
    • 1/3 cup milk of choice
    • 1 tsp Salt
    • 1 container (6 oz) plain, nonfat Greek Yogurt (or your favorite flavored one)
    • 1 tsp vanilla extract

    Preheat oven to 350F.

Using a mixer to cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Stir in eggs and vanilla extract.

In another bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon and salt. In a third bowl, combine the milk and yogurt.

Add half of the dry ingredients to the butter and sugar mixture and mix gently — just enough to combine without over-mixing. Add the wet ingredients and stir gently. Mix in the remaining dry ingredients, yes, your batter should be thick!

Pour the batter into a greased loaf pan and bake for 50-55 minutes, or until a tester inserted into the center comes out clean and let it cool completely before slicing.

Ok, I know its called "pound cake" but don't let that scare you from eating a slice, or the whole loaf. I don't judge.

    1. Eden!! Text me…I’ll be in Culver City Saturday morning for a breakfast interview thingy…do you think you can meet in the afternoon-ish?

Oh, and I hope you’re still saving up for a dslr…and you’ll be one step closer to being a legit blogger! 😉

I suck at being patient. I suck at keeping a regular sleep schedule. I suck at thinking before I speak/write. I suck at responding to e-mails. I suck at blog reading. I suck at lying.

    2. I post fast food on my blog (yes, I eat it on occasion. So sue me.), I don’t own a DSLR (I only upgraded my point & shoot about 6 months ago!), and I don’t really even like vegetables, so there’s no way I’m good at #8 either. I also suck at math (amusing, since I work in a bank), and I have issues in being quiet too. I border on obnoxiously loud most of the time.

    3. Good lord, I could write a novel, and that’s not me being down on myself 🙂 There are just things I accept I suck at, for instance, the fact that I don’t even know what a dslr is. Anyway, I agree with most of your things and add in directions. It doesn’t matter where I am, I can’t even give someone directions to my house from 10 miles away. I don’t know highway names or have a clue what direction I’m facing. Seriously. I’m an anti-GPS.

    4. Girl you do not suck! Trust me!!!

But I agree it is good to be honest and face my weaknesses, even though I hate to admit them. I am a loud speaker too, actually my whole family is, I cannot change that, haha
I am not good with money (budgeting, etc), I am not good organization, I am not a good healthy living blogger either

    5. Teehee love it. Sometimes it’s fun to do an “opposite” post. I actually enjoyed doing a post on things I hate. Sounds like Miss Debbie Downer, but it’s kind of fun. I love that you suck at whispering. Let’s see, I suck at lying. You can read it ALL over my face when I try to lie. My face is very expressive. You will know right away if I don’t like you 😉

    6. I think it’s harder for lots of people to think of things they are good at versus what they aren’t good at. At least it is for me! One thing that really stands out that I suck at is doing nice things for myself. I bought myself a tea yesterday…it’s a start!

Bahaha don’t fret my dear! Your last letter was perfectly legible!

    7. I could go on and on about the things I suck at, but I’ll refrain. Funny how you aren’t good at whispering because when I do my husband gets pissed at me because I’m WAY too loud and I think people hear me. I don’t mean to be, but I guess I just suck at it.

I suck at cooking. Unless I’m following a recipe step by step, I’m worthless. I still feed my family and I guess I havn’t chased them off with it….yet. I dono, maybe it’s not THAT bad.

I also suck at making friends. I’m such an introvert and quiet that people often think I’m stuck up (I think?). It’s hard for me to open up to people. I’m really gonna try harder when we move though and put myself ‘out there’ a little, esp at my new job (where ever that will be). I don’t want people getting the wrong impression of me, you know?

    8. I am a horrible liar. My face gets red really easily (blame it on the Irish genes) so the look of guilt is written all over my face. It also makes me a bad comedian because I’m either (a) laughing before the punch line evens comes out of my mouth, or (b) so red in the face people are just laughing at me before the joke is done.

    9. Hmmm, where do I start? I suck at anything that requires flexibility. I suck at math also! I suck at keeping a schedule and not procrastinating. I can’t even whistle! Lol! There’s more, but I’d bore you…

      • A) you never bore me, you suck at it B) I’m VERY unflexible and I teach yoga, so there! C) I’d give you an example of my horrible procrastination, but I’ll do it later 😉

    10. Hey hey, one of the things that I *like* about you is that you’re not a healthy blogger. Please don’t get good at that! 😉 Or the subtlety. Boring boring.

Hmm, what do I suck at…
      – meeting deadling (always a last minute panic)
      – not laughing the loudest at my own jokes
      – being tempered (emotionally speaking)

That recipe makes me want to eat yoghurt again so that I can make that cake!

    11. Ha! this post totally made me laugh…I suck as whispering too…it never works out for me. I also suck at returning phone calls…im terrible..oh well! Great post and I love your site btw! Just found it! I read some of the comments..are you in Culver City? (me too!) have a lovely day!

    12. Well I’m very glad to hear you don’t suck at being judgmental – esp as I would devour that whole loaf!

PS I hear whispering is bad for your throat so who cares. Inside voices are quiet enough for me!

    13. I suck at blogs. I don’t even know how to respond to my comments. I suck at keeping emotions inside of me, so I cry all the time. I suck at being social on the weekends – I’m tired. I suck at baking or cooking. I do not suck at drinking beer 🙂

    14. Hmmm seems like you and I are alike in some ways…I am also bad at math.. I’m probably worse than you though…I literally can only do addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. NO algebra, and NO geometry. Don’t even ask how I did on my tests haha.

      I suck at laughing..I have a loud laugh 😦
Sometimes I can be. Bit awkward too… :/

    15. hahaha i think i’m a pretty damn shitty blogger i eat the same thing every day don’t have a cool camera or a lot of commenters but i am damn good at driving and taking photos at the same time

what i really suck at is writing haha i would so much rather do anything else then write a damn paper

    16. I totally understand where you’re coming from on the comedic timing. I always screw up my own jokes because I tell them all wrong. Maybe I would be more popular if I figured that one out.
I suck at looking good. Seriously, I never have the desire to put on decent outfits or makeup. I’m always in pajamas, sweats, or running clothes with my hair up in a ponytail. It’s kind of depressing, but I just don’t feel like spending my time getting all prettied up.

    17. First off, I’m glad my post resonated with people! I worried that I was the only one who had a myriad of non-talents. Not that I think you aren’t talented, but you know what I mean.

I am not a healthy blogger either. I don’t know how to take a single decent picture and a DSLR just seems…overwhelming. I can’t cook anything that I’d serve to company, I can’t whistle, I have no rhythm…my God, how much time do you have?

I CAN do math. This is one area where I excel! Feel free to throw your math and budgeting questions my way. I’ll expect some pound cake in return!

    18. I am the opposite of you- I really suck at being loud. I am quiet and somewhat introverted. In large groups of people I barely speak. I can be loud but only one on one and not in public.
I suck at maintaining my blog or coming up with good ideas for posts (if I wrote what I was actually feeling it would be too depressing, but otherwise it just seems phony, so I haven’t been writing at all)
I’m not funny or witty or talented…but I do have fairly good penmanship so at least I have that going for me!
As for being a healthy blogger, that is overrated…it’s more entertaining when you mock low carb vegan protein chia seed funnel cakes.

    19. Eh, I chalk it all up to “know thyself.” I’m bad at driving when I’m wearing my glasses, paying attention to only one thing at a time, censoring what I say, manual labor…

But I’m good at reading your blog hahaha! and writing really obnoxiously long comments!
      Cheers dear 🙂
      Meri

    20. I can totally see the plot behind the awesome recipe you posted. You are trying to distract us from the things you suck at. It’s actually genius! I should try it too… Only I can’t cook that well and will not bake… I suck at quite a few things but one of the first that becomes evident when people meet me is the lack social and tactical skills. Let’s just say that political correctness is not too high on my list…

    21. Mmmmm poundcake!

I’m terrible at time management and am only on time because I fear the wrath of my employer.

I also suck at cleaning and calling people back. Oh well, at least I make up for it by making people cupcakes and at least my dog loves me 🙂

    22. ahh, I love the things you suck at. To me , its awesome! I love the pound cake recipe, the being subtle, the technology. But you are WRONG about one thing, you do not suck at being a comedian!

    23. Just found you from Janetha’s blog- so glad I did! You are hilarious 🙂
I’m not good at a lot of things…I am pretty talentless in terms of music, athletics, dancing, etc…I read Ameena’s post too and I think the only thing I’m pretty good at is reading really fast, which isn’t something I can impress other people with (very often at least).
I started out trying to be a “healthy blogger” because everyone else was doing it but honestly I only eat oatmeal once a month, if that, I don’t run long distances (and rarely run short distances), I don’t eat much PB, and I don’t get to travel or receive awesome goodies from companies promoting their products (I wish!!). I do drink my greens though! I’m still trying to find my bloggy niche, I guess.
I’m really looking forward to browsing your blog more and reading more from you!
