“Squashed” Mac n Cheese, “Weight Loss Tips”, and Flashback Friday!

"squashed" mac n cheese

Its so ironic that the people I know who’ve had eating disorder get asked for their “diet” or “weight loss” tips. Of course, never people that actually know about our struggles. Its usually desperate people, who obviouslt notice nothing about us other than our unusual thinness. They probably didn’t think we looked great but they think we must know a thing or two about weight loss and dieting.

Oh yes, we know so much, but yet, we know absolutly nothing!

This asking for weight loss advie tappered off after I left outpatient treatment. But a few months ago, I got asked at the grocery store what I eat to look “that good”. I felt proud that maybe I do look better now, but the asking for diet tips irked me.

Anyhow, I thought I would share some possible responses to those irked by people constantly asking how to loose weight:

Use superglue as lip gloss

Exhale with all your might BEFORE stepping onto the scale (air has to weigh something, right?)

Stand with arms raised, making pressure on the scale lighter. (Waving them is optional but occasionally helps!)

Don’t burn off fat with a candle…. a blow torch will work quicker

Instead of carrying your laptop around – start carrying your desktop PC

Anything somebody made ‘just for you’ must be eaten regardless of the calories because to do otherwise would be uncaring and insensitive

Weigh yourself after a haircut; this is good for at least half a pound of hair

Care to share your “tips”?

As far as real diet tips, I think its simple. Eat for the moment (dont think about what you ate before, or what you will eat later), eat a little a of everything, and eat what you want (really want, sometimes, my eating disorder says it wants veggies when it really wants chocolate).

And…..its flashback friday!

I was so cute...what happened!?

yea, we sprawled out on empty seats on a long flight, probably to Belgium where my dad is from. I think its funny we still sleep like that!

this was the period when I refused to wear pants. Dresses and skirts....and oddly enough, overalls were ok. Boy have I changed.

For today’s recipe, I thought I’d make a cool gluten free mac n cheese. You will need

-about half a medium squash roasted or made soft in the microwave (about three minuets)

-about half cup of cheddar cheese

-garlic powder

-red chili flake

-BBQ popped potato chips (trader joes brand, or the “popchips” kind)

So simple.

once cooked, take out the strands

top the cooked strands with cheese, chili flakes, and garlic powder and put in the oven until the cheese melts. Before serving, crumple the BBQ popped potato chips on top (as the bread crumbs).

So I’m kind of wanting Β brulee torch so to increase my chances of getting a free one, I’m hoping to win Lisa’s Giveaway. Check it out.

  1. these are funny weight loss tips! πŸ˜€
I think everyone wants magic to happen when it comes to weight loss although every one that there is no magic at all, it’s just eat healthy and exercise.

      • My parents don’t either! I only have one of them. The other one (the right) is totally normal. My facialist said that both her kids have it though – one squashed one and one normal. For a long time I thought maybe I had broken the growth plate when I was little but now I think it’s probably some weird genetic thing.

  2. I have never commented before, but came across your blog and I just wanted to say how uplifting and lighthearted your blog is. I too, had an eating disorder and went to treatment. I know it is a serious matter, but my way of coping was making jokes about how crazy treatment was and the things people would do. I can totally relate to your outlook on everything!

  3. I loved these! I’ve gotten asked more for exercise tips than weight loss but I’m going to try and remember some of these. The next time someone asks me I want to use one.. I’m serious, I’ll do it.

When I was little I hated dresses and couldn’t stand when my mom made me wear them. Now? Now I love them! I’d wear dresses all summer long if I could but unfortunately I don’t have enough variety.. yet.

  4. Bah haha! I laughed at the comment above!

And those tips! Seriously, why do people think we hold some kind of huge secret to loosing weight that they’ve never heard before? There’s no quick fix or short cut. (besides starving yourself). And hey, if they’re into that form of self torture……….

  5. I would think being asked about health tips now would be a great feeling. You’ve come so far. I’ve never had any eating disorders, so sometimes it’s hard to read your posts b/c it makes me so sad that so many have to go though such things. I know men experience eating disorders too, but it is predominately women. It’s just sad the pressure women put on themselves and even on others.

  6. I don’t get asked advice as much as I get the “not that you have to worry about your weight” comments from people. My parents tend to discuss healthy eating and exercise with me, and I tell them what I know, just eat well and balanced, because you want a lifestyle change not a quick fix. But they are constantly bouncing from extremes of over indulging and eating restrictively. Clearly, they have never been a huge support system for me through this. I have never tried spaghetti squah. You should come over and make me some. I’ll make us dessert!

  7. I love this version of Mac and Cheese, just HATE making the squash though. Those darn strings get EVERYWHERE!
You always make me laugh, love the diet tricks. Sadly, I think some people would actually try and use them. πŸ™‚

  8. I get asked for eating and exercise tips all the time. It’s usually “Hey, how do you stay so thin?” I never really know how to answer that question??

You were a very cute kid! I’m not surprised you turned out as pretty as you are!

  9. I enjoyed your pictures! Sophia came home from pre-k last year and stated that she didn’t have any dresses and that I needed to go to the store and get her some. Me, I’m most comfortable in my gym clothes, and the boys wear jeans all of the time, so I forget about her clothes haha! Your dress was cute. It looks like something she would wear.

  10. I love the diet tips! Hilarious… and what about standing on the scales with one foot in the air… or after a shower (surely, if someone was really dirty, they’d wash off a couple of pounds?!)
Definitely going to try the rosemary cornbread too, thank you πŸ™‚
