Coconut Shrimp and Film Picks (for Theaters and Netflix)

Here’s something you may not know about me. Before culinary school, I thought I wanted to be an actress and I studied theater and film in college. I’m a big film buff.

New releases usually come out on Fridays. So in the spirit of that (I wrote this post on friday), I thought I’d list some of the movies I want to see that are soon to be released. And if you tend to be like me and sometimes dont like paying so much to the theaters, I thought I’d give you some cool netflix picks!

First, for the theater releases:

This film looks awesome! Foodie or not, I think everyone gets competitive and this is looks like a great film, with the added fun of food porn!

The same guy that made “An Inconveinent Truth” directed this film. I’ve been wanting to see it for some time now, but I actually heard a “so so” review for it on the radio today. I don’t care, I still am itching to see it.

This next film has one thing going against it, that Emma Roberts is in it. I worked with her on her Nickelodeon show a few years ago when I was trying to be an actress like everyone else in LA. She’s not a very good one…but maybe I’m just jealous because her aunt is “Pretty Woman”. Anyhow, I do want to see this film regardless of her:

Here are films I HAVE seen, available on netflix that I think are well worth your time (and trust me, most arent long because I get peeved by super long movies).

The one below is a great Isreali film (yes, I’m half Israeli, so maybe I’m biased). But seriously, this won many awards and very moving and funny at the same time. Its also based around a Jewish holiday which is actually celebrated this week.

This next film is one of the most charming films around. Besides the fact that I am a huge Craig Fergison fan, this film is really one of a kind. I nearly peed my pants in this one particular scene (you’ll know which one if you watch it!).

I’m sure many of you have seen this film, or at least heard about it. I absolutely loved and it and I think I’d like to own it someday. Sadly, the writer/director passed away about a year ago and this was her last film. But I think it was so brilliant and just made me want to eat some pie (and I’m not a big fan of pies!).

Since I have loads of yummy jars of Crofter’s, I thought I’d use some up in non-dessert forms! Don’t forget you can win yourself 4 jars of any kind you want in my giveaway! Heres the ingreidients:

-8-10 large shrimp (feel free to use seitan or tofu)

-2 or so tablespoons of Crofters apricot preserves

-some water (to thin out the jam)

-shredded coconut (enough to coat)

gettin coated in coconuttiness

Super simple! simply microwave the jam with the water and when all melted, mix with the shrimp. Then coat the shrimp with the coconut and put in the preheated 400 degree oven for about twenty minutes. Serve over a salad or rice!

  1. I have never seen Saving Grace, but I have seen The Waitress. I love it. And yes, it did make me want to eat and make pie. I am not a huge pie person either. But I think I like the process of making them. So I am trying to turn myself into a pie person, or at leats one who can appreciate a good pie. Oprah is talking about Waiting for Superman right now. So that was weird timing.
I love shrimp and yours look fantastic!

      • I do want to see Kings of Pastry! I just don’t know if it is coming out anywhere near me. But I will have to see it eventually. I just wish I could go have fun in culinary school, so maybe it makes me a tad jealous.

  2. There has to be more to the story than you not thinking she can act. I mean, she’s not that bad. She must of been snotty or something! Do tell!! I’m nosey 🙂

I haven’t seen any of these films. But I’m about to read a long review on Waiting For Superman in my Entertainment weekly magazine. They’re making a big deal out of it, so it must be pretty interesting!

  3. I’m honestly not a big movie girl! I’m all about the TV shows… I just think that there is something so much more to a show that continues on and develops each week. Plus, I have the attention span on a toddler so anything over an hour is pretty hard for me to complete 😛
Having said that, I always wanted my own TV show! I’ve never really been a natural actress, but it sure would be a job!

PS. I hate ‘An Inconvenient Truth’. The first time it was pretty interesting, but having to watch it five times over in a boring high-school class definitely ruined it for me.

  4. “Waitress” is seriously one of my favorite movies ever, as is “Kissing Jessica Stein,” but no one has ever seen it. While I like the mainstream flicks once in awhile, I usually gravitate towards more indy/artsy films. However, involve food and make it under 90 minutes and I’ll watch. Go figure.

  5. I am not much of a movie watcher. I have seen the Waitress though. It was much better than I thought it was going to be – always a nice surprise. We did watch a movie last night that was supposed to be funny. Um, not so much. Maybe it was my mood, but Death & a Funeral? Sucked. Hope you’re having a good Saturday

  6. I haven’t heard of one of those movies. lol… guess I need to get back into things.. or watch a little more tv? But they all look pretty good! I’m actually kind of excited for some of those. Good suggestions!

Shrimp, apricot, cococnut… sounds sooooooooooo good.

  7. Hm, I haven’t heard of any of those films yet, but it usually lasts several months until movies that are broadcasted in the U.S. already get to German movie theaters because they all have to be synchronized before. It’s two month since I’ve been to the movies, so time is coming to go again!

  8. I loved The Waitress! But I do not love Emma Roberts…I also think it’s because of who her aunt is and I think Emma got to where she is simply for that reason. That kind of thing bothers me – which is why I also dislike the fact that Will Smith’s son is suddenly an actor too.

I need to get over myself, I know!

    • Oh my God – I so agree with the Will Smith thing. And now his daughter has a record deal and a song …”Whip My Hair”..? with Jay-Z’s label and stuff….blah! – clearly I need to get over myself as well LOL!

  9. I love those movies that are filmed in other countries. Slumdog Millionare, Hotel Rwanda, & Kite Runner are a few of my favorite movies.. They are so entertaining and at the same time they make you think.
Thanks for the trailers I’ll be sure to check into some of those
& yes Emma Roberts isn’t a very good actress LOL

  10. I loved ‘Saving Grace’, and I want to see ‘It’s Kind of a Funny Story’ whenever it comes out near me! I also want to try your coconut shrimp recipe ASAP. Droooool. 🙂

  11. I love that the films aren’t mainstream ones. I was expecting, like “Easy A” or something ;). I actually would like to see one reviewed at the TIFF Festival recently (so I’ve seen on TV – I wasn’t there! I wish…) – anyways – “Black Swan” with Natalie Portman. She’s a Ballerina…that’s all I know about it LOL – but apparently there’s a lot of Oscar Buzz for her role.
