Black Eyed Pea Soup and “How to Get Comments”

You may remember last week, Abby gave us some wonderful tips to being a “Super Star Blogger”.

Today, I’m giving you a rundown on how to get comments (not like I’m an expert or anything since I think the most I’ve had is probably like 60; from a giveaway…but more on that later). Remember sarcasm is my first language so save your hate mail:

1. Giveaways/Competition/Freebies
– Of course this is number one. “Free” anything will bring out the shyest lurkers out of their hole. Posts about giveaways and competitions are undisputedly one of the biggest comment getters. Let’s not forget, the bigger is the prize, more will be the number of people (comments) participating in it. So want comments? giveaway a piano or a country or something.

2. Rant….a lot! People like reading rants cause it gives them a chance to vent also. When they do so, they don’t feel as shitty about having it bottled up like they did. I’ve been to so many therapists that I can pretty much rant to a telephone pole to get it out me. Hence I don’t feel all that compelled to comment on a rant post. Rant over!

4) Threaten: Say your considering closing up blog shop, no one wants to feel responsible for making another blogger abandon his quest-towards-health-blog. Its very “unhealthy”.

5) “Confess”: Confession posts are fun because you learn there are people out there who do even worse things than you. This is a sure fire way Β to get people to comment.

6) Gossip:Let’s face it, we are creatures that thrive off talking about other people. Whether it be Kim Kardashian or some other blogger, it will bring comments (but I’m warning, they won’t always be very nice ones…). Its doesn’t have to be bad things. Say how you think Charlie Sheen should consider doing a “Venus” commercial or how a certain blogger is a genius for making a bowl of oatmeal or doing a triatholon while raising seven kids and still managing to have time to get a book deal.

7) Ask for tips: For some reason, whenever I see a “share your tips” post, tons of bloggers and readers come to the rescue. I’m surprised there aren’t as many DIY books from bloggers with all the tip sharing going on (not that its a bad thing).

8) Debate: Start a heated debate on whether a overnight-chiaseed-bloob-protein funnel cake-in-a-jar is better or healthier than nooch crusted “faux”tato smoothie. Trust me, this can get heated!

9) Share a great triumph: Not necessarily poking fun at this one, but every time I say something about my eating disorder or my mom’s death, comments usually come in. So if your REALLY desperate for comments, say how you lost 1000 pounds, how you saved a baby from a speeding car, how you overcame some disease (never had a disease? make one up!), etc. Be creative, most people won’t do a fact check.

10) Write a post about blogging: Write a post like I did right now! Or like the one abby wrote. Posts about the actual blogosphere gets people talking. Personally, I love it when these posts generate comments because there usually is debate between other commenters which makes my heart flutter slightly. I know, I’m weird.

And since I feel awful for not writing up a recipe yesterday, I leave you with this bowl of goodness:

  • 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 large onion (or two large leeks), diced
  • 1 large carrot, sliced
  • 1 stalk celery, sliced
  • 4 cloves of garlic, sliced
  • 1 sprig fresh thyme
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper, or to taste
  • 4 cups veggie/chicken broth
  • 1 can diced tomatoes
  • 1 lbs dried black eye peas (soaked overnight if you don’t have a pressure cooker) and of you don’t want to use dried, use 1 can of black-eyed peas, rinsed

Heat oil in a large pot (or your pressure cooker) over medium heat. Add onion, carrot and celery and cook, stirring, until just tender, 5 to 7 minutes. Add sliced garlic, thyme and crushed red pepper and cook, stirring, until fragrant (about 15 seconds). Increase heat to high and add broth, tomatoes and their juice, and the black eyed peas. If used a pressure cooker, lock theΒ lid on the pressure cooker. Bring to high pressure. Lower heat to maintain high pressure for 20 minutes. Let the pressure release naturally. Open it up and discard the thyme sprig. If your NOT using a pressure cooker (get one! but if you aren’t taking my advice….), bring to a boil, scraping up any browned bits. Reduce heat to maintain a simmer and cook, stirring occasionally, until the veggies are tender (about 20-30 min) Discard the thyme sprig and serve!

  1. Loving the meta-post! I’m always interested to see what kinds of posts elicit more of a response than others. Usually it’s some kind of trouble of tragedy. No one likes to read “yeah, things are ticking over nicely, thanks”! I’ll have to go find me a life crisis to write about. That shouldn’t be hard.. πŸ˜‰

  2. I had to crack up about the giveaway one just b/c I’m doing one on my blog at the moment, but it’s true. I’ve gotten more hits in 1 day than I usually get over the course of a week (the comments are slow to roll in, but that’s cool)! Ah, what people (myself included) won’t do for a freebie! Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go and rescue some kale chips that are tied to some train tracks, and then write about it. πŸ™‚

  3. Too funny and all true – I am guilty myself of some if them πŸ™‚ (like right now, ha!)

Being a southern gal, that black eyed pea recipe looks wonderful – it’d be great with some cornbread hot cakes (I make mine like pancakes, except that, well, it’s cornbread!!)

  4. Truth: the one giveaway I did got about 5x my usual comments. And even though I used random.org, I secretly wanted the prize to go to a regular commenter (luckily it did).

I love the point of blogging about blogging. We can’t really talk about that stuff with non-bloggers, so I think that those debates get especially exciting for many people.

  5. Or you could forget #3 and have people comment that you skipped a number πŸ˜‰ I kid because I love you and completely agree–obviously.
The “threatening” thing is classic, as it always seems like a desperate ploy to puff up someone’s ego and tell them life wouldn’t go on without their sporadic posts. What should I change? What do YOU want to read? I know everyone blogs for different reasons, but if you don’t know what to say, why blog?

Anyway, great tips πŸ˜‰ Try and garner sympathy, compliments or bring up some unfortunate time in your life and you’re golden (or annoying, depending on the reader.)

  6. Apologize profusely for something…anything, eg: not posting for a day, your blog going too commercial and/or neglecting its roots, forgetting to list an ingredient in a recipe, or having otherwise having misled your readers.

Also, people seem to go ga-ga over posts written by the blogger’s significant other.

  7. HA! I’m planning a giveaway on mine soon. Probably this week sometime since I’ve been putting it on the back burner for a while. Anyway, I’m doing it purely out of the kindness of my (most of the time cold) heart. Yes, I’m capable of that much to my son and husband’s surprise.

I love me some comments, but I don’t create my posts based on how many comments I think I’ll get from them. I’m sure most do though. Either way, now I’m gonna be paranoid about what I blog about. Thanks EH-DUN!

  8. Ok, I’ll “confess” in my next post that I actually never think about those things. Maybe that’s why I don’t get comments? Well, I’ll think about it while eating the soup. I actually made an almost the same soup with lentils the other day that I was still dying of the flu. πŸ™‚

  9. It’s working, it’s working! I’ve been lurking here for ages (ever since I stalked you in April’s comments πŸ˜‰ but see, you blogged about blogging and now here I am commenting!!!

I actually don’t really mind that I don’t get lots of comments…I feel like I know my little community of commenters that much better! πŸ™‚

  10. That soup looks so yummy! I know about a really cool health, natural food event that is coming up in the next couple of weeks. Let me know if you are interested in finding out more and I will send you the details.

    Best,
    Nicole

  11. Love the tips and I agree with them all. When we are really open about something on our blog that we are struggling with we get a lot of views and comments πŸ™‚ It is funny though how some blogs do get more comments than others, so interesting I think.

  12. haha also how to get comments..just be awesome. like you hahaha

anyways thank you so much for the comment you left tonight! seriously it left me beaming πŸ™‚ i can’t stand when people assume they know you and know what’s right for you especially when it’s unsolicited. so i appreciate your support πŸ™‚ you’re a dollface and a great friend!

  13. haha this was an awesome post…i usually just read blogs but never comment, but I love your blog it is so real…and i totally just comment on blogs during giveaways I mean I love free things so why not

  14. Hee- crack up! And so true- all of it. Yes, I got so many comments about my Dad getting very sick and passing away- I guess that says something positive about the blogosphere.

I never really get all crazy on my blog and go out on a limb, so that totally explains my lack of comments hahah oh well. Life goes on. Maybe I’ll stop blogging- that’ll show’em! haaha
